Last emissions test!

Unless they change the rules on me, of course...

I took it in after work today, the guy running the dyno test didn't know what he was doing and kept goosing the throttle to catch up to the curve, so it failed first time around. 2nd chance he was a little smoother, still wasn't very pure, but it passed.

The registration renewal is due in October, at which time it has to have had an emissions test within the last 6 months. I'll get the renewal notice in September, I'll go right in as soon as I get it along with the emissions test results from today and renew the plates. When the registration is due in 2006, it will be eligible for "collector plates", good for 5 years, and no emissions testing is required as long as you don't let the plates lapse. (Is there is jumping up & down, clicking your heels smiley?)

This weekend, my son & I are finishing assembling the 350 shortblock, taking the 305 out, then during the week I'll take the heads to my "engine builder" to be checked out and freshened up (3 angle valve job, positive-type stem seals, mostly), then we'll re-assemble next weekend and try to get it running again. (There might be a few parts "missing" when it goes back together...)

I'll probably have to drive the '57 to work next week.

Is there a "pity me" smiley???

Congratulations, but I still haven't taken my car in yet for the first emissions test.

I still vote for the BBC. It would be kinda fun to stop by a week later and ask if they noticed this under the hood.

Yea I know thats not even the 454 its the 427 for my malibu. I could drop that engine in the bird slap a TH350 behind it and be done probably by tomorrow morning assuming all the parts I think will fit actually do fit. Been real tempted to do so lately.

Yes, 5-7, we fell really bad for you. Seriously, though, I hope the weather holds for you. You should be about done with snow by now.

I just renewed my last set of regular plates for the T/A. Next time it gets A-V plates (antique vehicle) and the rate drops considerably. Since it gets about 1,500-2,000 miles per year and is still on original front tires (somehow the rears haven't lasted as long), I think I'll qualify. Doesn't help the insurance at all, however. Plus the A-V plates are an antique white/tan color instead of white. I'm not sure about that one.

And yes, what is this "emissions test" of which you speak? Is the exhaust required to emit above a specified level of sound to prove that the car is worthy? Is this somehow related to the Taco Bell drive-through lane? Are there limits to the amount of rubber shards thrown off the tires on launch? Interesting. I'll have to research that a bit more.

The "collector" plates here are interesting. The age of the vehicle is the only issue. No restrictions on miles driven, usage, etc. The cost is the same as one-year plates - you just pay for 5 years up front.

Huge benefit is no more Taco Bell drive-through (I really shouldn't disparage the TB DT folks, though - I'm sure their average IQ is higher than that of the e-testing people).

When I moved down to Florida, I was amazed that there were no emissions testing requirements. I asked around and was told that Florida USED to have them, but after something like 7 - 15 years of emissions testing and atmospheric surveys, there was no discernable change either good or bad as far as NOx, sulphur, etc in the air down here. Could be due to a lot of reasons such as:

Good breeze across the state pretty much all the time.
Almost every car I see ANYWHERE is new (i.e. less than 4 years)

and so on and so on...I'm all for emissions devices on street-only vehicles, but I'm ripping all mine off now as should be completed as a street/track vehicle within the next year.

You can even tell the difference in air quality when looking up into the sky. When I was in LA, I could look up and see this 20 mile wide tan-ish colored area over the city. No wonder they are so **** about emissions over there.
