fuel problem need help

Hi, I own an 89 Iroc Z with a 305 TBI motor. The problem all started when I replaced the fuel pump. I did it once, and the pump didnt work. I have done it a second time, tested the pump and it worked, then put it all back together. I had to hold the two connectors together for it to work, the pig tail off of the pump to the connector that gives it power. Now even when I hold them together, i dont hear the pump working. I dont know if its an electrical short or something else. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated. I need to get my daily drive running again. Thanks for reading.
