ticking sound coming from front of motor

Hi, i just bought a rare 66 z28 with the 396 motor with fuel injection. i got a real good deal on it from a friend of my dad's in Pheonix. it's got a lot of rust on it but he told me that if i restored it, it would be worth a lot of money. The motor was just rebiult in 94 with hi performance parts including a lingenfilter crankshaft and cam. He also upgraded the computer to an odb1 with a performance chip, i'm not really sure what exactly obd1 is but it's supposedly the best computer avalable. anyway, i've been driving it for a week now and it's making a real loud ticking sound that seems to be coming from the front of the motor. my dad thinks it's the carburator but i'm not sure. it only does it when i rev it up real fast. does anyone know what it might be? thank you for your help.

Sounds like a valve tap to me.

With the engine running.....

Get a long handle screwdriver and place the metal end on the valve cover.... now place your ear on the handle of the screwdriver.

Repeat the above step for each cyl by moving from the front of the valve cover to the rear of the valve cover. Both sides.

After you have checked all 8 cyl, did you hear any valves being louder than the others???

If yes, then you need to remove the valve covers and adjust your rockers. It could be you have sticky valves, crap in the valve stems, or a floating valve.

If no, then you need to find out exactly where the tapping is coming from.

That would be a rather rare beast indeed, considering what the RPO Z28 consisted of and why it was created in the year when it was introduced (along with the Camaro itself). Personally I think the archives must be wrong, I don't believe there were that manuy produced that year.
