adjusting rocker arm bolts.

well, my engine is in, and i want to double check the rockers to make sure they are adjusted properly... i had to take the heads off to get a bolt out, and i had to take out the push rods, etc....

so, how do i check them for proper tightness?

the engine is a 350 tpi out of an 89 iroc.

thank you

jon

you have studs with nuts not bolts. rremove valve covers with engien running loosen rocker nut untill you hear it ticking then tighten it untill it stops then go another 1/2 to 3/4 turn. repete till you have all 16 rockers checked and adjusted.

Is it bad for the engine to be run with no cover on it? What about MESS.

Does it get messy adjusting the rockers with the cover off?

Just curious, I am looking to adjust soon. Just wanted as many details as possible.

89,

It can get messy, but it is the most accurate way to set lash. The engine is supposed to be at full operating temperature to set valve lash, regardless of the cam/lifter design. There are oil deflector clips available to keep the oil mess to a minimum. and I've had pretty good success with them. Setting the lash cold can get you very close, and typically there is enough travel in hydraulic lifters to compensate for innaccuracies of this method, but it is more accurate and just about as easy to adjust them while idling.

It's also a good excuse to do a thorough engine cleaning after you've finished.
