torque wrench

I'm cheap, I dont have 100 dollars to deposit down on a torque wrench rental at azone, I'm trying to bolt my heads down, would I be taking a very stupid/big risk if I just tightened them down a lot? I did the head gaskets on a 3.8 ford, had to have something like 45 ft lbs, i know our engines need 60-70 and have to reach that point in 3 segments or whatever.

Should I just save up the 100 for the deposit?

Or can I just get away with tightening the **** out of them

Saving up the $100 that you'll get back when you return the tool is obviously much cheaper than replacing any engine parts that are destroyed because the clamping force wasn't spread evenly over the heads and head gaskets.

Try to find a beam type torque wrench. They're a lot cheaper than the clicker types. That or there is the $20 clicker type they sell at Autozone and Harbor Freight. Not sure of thier accuracy but its' better than guessing.

i bought that one and had it for a few weeks. i double checked the torque specs by using a friends snap on and it seems to be on the money. not bad for a 10 dollar el cheapo.

How'd ya do that? Hooked them together?

Anyone know where you're supposed to go to get one recalibrated? My clicker is Very old, I'm thinking of just replacing it with a new Craftsman or SK one.

haha didnt even think of looking online to purchase it

The only thing ive ever ordered online was a microphone *ive been online since I was 14*

Now it seems the vast majority of parts I buy for my car are off the internet.

The internet is your friend

Not sure if SK does or not...but Craftsman does not warrentee thier Torque wrenches like other hand tools.

Sears also wants $50 to recalibrate thier $75 torque wrench. So I guess it's a throw away item?
