Not because I'm getting one...but my automotive teacher says they don't exist. Is he right?

They exist.

Look for 71-72 Impalas, with "400" badges on the side. There were 2 versions of "400"s, known conveniently as "400 2-barrel" and "400 4-barrel". The "400 2-barrel" was a small block with 4-bolt mains, easily identifiable by having 3 freeze plugs in the side of the block, unlike all other small blocks that have 2; the car came with single exhaust. The "400 4-barrel" was a 402 big block, something else altogether of course; those cars came with dual exhaust.

They exist, and if I had a digital cam, I would give you a pick to show your teacher...I have one sitting in my garage.

Early '70s Impalas (especially wagons), Caprices, Monte Carlos, and trucks all were available with 400 small-blocks which were 4-bolt mains for the first couple of years of production. In the later years (mid-70s) I've seen 400s in Chevelles also.

I suppose he doesn't acknowledge the existence of the 300CI and 340CI (yes, 340) Buick V-8s, the 164 Chevy six cylinder, 326 Pontiacs, the Olds 330 and 394 V-8s, and the 429 inch Cadillac V-8s.

Yes, those numbers are all correct, and were produced by the millions. I guess I AM old...

The most popular casting numbers for 400's is 3951509. This is a 2 bolt block. Finding a 3951511 casting can get you a 4 bolt main but not always. You could find them in 70-73 heavy duty trucks and full size cars.

Finding a 400 block with 3 freeze plugs on the side instead of 2 is usually a 4 bolt.

Personally I wouldn't go looking for a 4 bolt 400 block. The amount of metal in the webbing is less and won't take as much force as a 2 bolt. The most popular thing to do to a 2 bolt is to install a stud kit to increase the strength or to install splayed caps.
