Can't start

I got a friend and he got a 350 carb with mild cam .... it doesnt start what could he check exept for timing

gas goes in the motor thers a spark it turns but it doesnt light up

an other problem is he had prestone in is oil and it look like it was comming from the first driver side piston

if u got advise go a head i need help

could it something else then just the timing and fireing , sparks

plus every thing is knew except for the block and heads but they are rebuilt so

Engine: L98 (350 TPI)
Transmission: MD8 (700 R4) + 3.42 LS1 Rear
well if you have spark and fuel assuming the spark plug wires are in the correct order try this. while someone is cranking the engine, you or someone should try to move the distributor counter clockwise and clockwise. See which way you turn the dist that makes the engine wanna start. i had to do that with my 355 to get it to start.
