Vortec heads on a 305?

I've got a 305, dual exhaust and headers, and I plan on changing the cam soon. I'm considering changing the heads but I was wondering if it's worth the money. I've never done that much engine work before so I was wondering how much time it would take (very rough estimate) and what sort of gains I'd get. Is there any other mods I should do first?

If you have a TPI, you need a new$$400$$ intake to go with it. No other way around it, that is, if you want to keep the factory TPI.

Other than that, there isn't too much more too it. Decide if you want the intake first. Add the cost of the intake to the cost of the work to get the heads to be decent and you are in the price range of aftermarket castings that flow on par with Vortec's, have all the in-head upgrades, and can use the factory intake.

Damn, I'll just hold out and get a 350 then. Any idea on how long it would take to swap heads if I had the new intake?

I just completed my cam/head/intake TBI to carb swap. I work full time 12 hours days and it took my probaby a good 2 months and that was working on it every chance i got, and i am still trying to get it tuned to run right. However it was the first time i have ever tore an engine apart, so depending of how much time you have to work on it i would say anywhere from a week to a couple months

Holy crap! My reply was going to be a full weekend for a beginner down to a day for someone that knew what they were doing. I guess it's been to long since I was a beginner to think it would ever take someone that long...

Me and a friend swapped out his intake and heads in less than a day back in '90 (when we were seniors in high school) on his '86 IROC. Dang man, a week to a month!?!?!?
