I'm just an amateur, but I'll give you my 2 bits anyway.
Did you put posi addative in the oil??
Maybe the clutches are just wearing out.

No amateurs? Guess that leaves me out...
You could have at least listed the type of dofferential you have, though. The Borgs are different from the Saginaws, which are different from the New Ventures, which are different from the Zexel-Torsens, etc.

Anyhoo, I'm in a nice mood tonight so I'll poke for fun. No Vader, I already know your reply to that!
By cookies you mean donuts right? It's been a while but depending on what you have and what power you have you may not spin 'em both in a donut.
I will say that GM rears are extremely picky with their additives and weights. As For the clunk, I can almost guarantee what it is, but I'm no expert... in mechanics anyway.

Just another non-professional chiming in...what you need to do is...never mind.
Wait'll a pro tells ya.
Besides, that 2.77 doesn't have any clutches in it.
Hmmn, maybe there should be a rule.

hey 8mike9,
maybe fuc will work, well i guess we'll see.
anyway, just asking, not being one of those wise asses. But if he had a limited slip 2.77, wouldn't that have clutches?
just curious.
i'm always looking for an education.
I'm gonna go do some cookies, and bake some doughnuts!
Later all.

LOL, I'm not even expert enough to know whether to put "grease" or a high quality synthetic gear oil in my rear
!
Seriously, did you put in the limited-slip additive?

It uses a cone type assembley, one kinda rides in another and has a spring force on it. Not like the metal plates of old. I dunno, maybe it's called 'clutches', who knows.
To the original poster, a couple of things...
Additive is used to allow the cones or plates to slip within/against themselves without chattering.
The posi unit, IMO, has nothing to do with clucking when you put it in gear.
ONe wheel spinning is a sign the posi si not holding...but could be due to having an extreme force in place that inhibits the wheel from spinning.
Do this...
Pull a wheel off.
Fab a plate with a few holes that can be mounted on the axle.
As close to center as you can on the plate, either weld a nut, or drill a 1/2inch hole, and then file it to 1/2inch square hole.
With that side in the air, the other on the ground, and the car in neutral and the plate bolted to the axle housing, put your torque wrench 9probably need a 6-8inch extension) in the hole or on the nut you welded, and rotate the axle.
See how much torque it take to rotate it...I don't have my manual close by, but I think the spec should be no less than aboiut 40ft/lbs. A new posi/LS unit should hold 65-70ft/lbs.
This will give you an indication of how much your unit is worn.
As for the clunking, rotate the driveshaft (tranny in neutral) and see how much slop you have rotaining the pinion/shaft, against the ring gear. BW spec is probably .004-.008 or somewhere in there (most stock rears are about that) and see if that's where the clunking is coming from.
Also check the tranny mount while you're under it.
Did you replace both universals? Normally when they go they make a "clink" when you slip it into gear.

Anybody who pulls "cookies" with "graese" in their rear-end is the true AMETURE.
If you are to embarassed to admit you forgot posi aditive, dont think of it as something that allows your clutches (which is exactly what your car has cones or not) to slip more, think of it as something that allows them to operate correctly and without excessive wear. It sounds to me like an auburn, or auburn pro series posi. In which case the only posi additive that will work for you is GM's, It is a miracle sollution that works like magic. but disregard all that, because Im an ameture too
