rpm fluxuating, cant figure it out
I have a 92RS 305 TBI t-5...when i am driving thru a parking lot for example in first gear the rpm will be at about 1500 i think, and if I drive steady at that rpm the engine will start running real rough and almost die unles i clutch and pump the gas some..or when i am sitting still I can hold the rpms at a certain level (around 12-1500)and the engine will start almost like it is missing and running real rough and the rpms will start going lower and lower and kinda smells like gas, but it wont really die. it really does it bad when the air is on.I have removed the smog pump(per tech artical) and removed AIR tubes in manifold...replaced IAC and TPS.new plugs, wires, distributor, cap and rotor button, set timing...I'm at a loss dont know what else to try...the engine light hasnt come on either.PLEASE HELP!!!

i have the same exact symptons and i posted a thread about it but noone responded, i wish i could help you although i have a 2.8 mpfi, i think its similiar issue i replaced plug wires, checked all fuses i realized my interior idiot lights/ fuel guage fuse blew i replaced this still nothing im at a loss as well im assuming at this point its either a major vacuum leak somewhere (i do hear it when it happens its like a whistle) or some kind of ecm short, i have no clue though good luck and let me know if you find anything i will do the same

think i found problem
I disconnected and pulgged my vacuum line to my egr valve and it doesnt do it anymore...the egr valve was opening too much at about 1200 rpm causing the engine to loose vacuum and surge then go dead.mine is a tbi so it was easier to get to...but i suggest buying a haynes manual and checking the egr valve...i was pleasently supprised ...i havent driven the car yet to know if it will set a code or not with it being disconnected...i'll keep you posted...keep me posted also

i will def keep you posted tho yesterday i pulled all the plugs and looked they looked covered in oil on the base but leanish on the tips very odd, im thinking about replacing the distributor/rotor/ coil pack but first i will try to find the egr

your egr is covered up by your plenum i believe...but get a haynes manual at autozone and check that out before you buy another distributor...i did the same thing...im on my third one now ..it didnt help either time

the egr valve is controlled by a vacuum solonoid controlled by your ecm so the problem is probably something telling the ecm to open the egr valve prematurely....its a process but youll get it just dont give up...
