BELTS are killing me!

I have an '83 355 in my car with v-belts. No matter what I do, it launches the fan belt at 5,000 RPM. I have replaced the crank pulley, the waterpump, the waterpump pulley, and gotten new belts... nothing seems to work!

I am ready to take my car to the track, but I have to get this figured out.

Maybe the belt is too tight?

You need "Z" rated belts... J/K!

I didn't like my belts either, so I converted to Serpentine Belt and it seems so much smoother, no thrown or rolled belts, and is easier to replace a component.

I want to convert to serpentine, but I have an older engine, so I don't think I can just rob the pulleys from the boneyard and throw it together can I?

I repositioned the alternator bracket... I think the belt is going to stay on now... but I still want to convert to serpentine in the future... here's a pic of my pulleys now:

I bet I have spent over $70 on belts this week. My car would shoot them off at 6000 rpm. Just today I bought 4 belts for this thing to get this straitened out. I used string to get everything lined up but still it threw them off. I was at the carwash today putting a belt back on and a friend told me that I should try one of those belts that is smooth on the inside instead of having the ridges. Anyway, it is called a top cog belt. The ridges are on top instead of on the bottom.

The one that I used came from Advance Auto Parts and the brand is "Dayco". The "Dayco Top Cog Belt" has a part number on it that represents the size.

Just take a string and go around the alternator, water pump, and crank. Then measure it. Mine was 47 inches because I use a big deep groove racing pulley. The part number for instance was 15470. The 15 is the thickness. (15/32) The 470 means 47 inches long.

I raced several times tonight and it hit 6500 rpm numerous times. It's still there. The others would either come off or spin upside down on the pulleys. Hope this helps.

If you have V-belt mounted accessories, then there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to convert to serpentine.
