horsepower loss and brake trouble

my little 305 runs so strong after starting up. once it reaches about 160-180 degrees, it shows its true power and runs real nice. That just goes to say that it gets up to about 220 - 240 degrees and then it starts running like crap. It is bad enough to where when i put the pedal to the metal, my car wont even down shift or show half the power that it has when it is between 160 and 180. What should I do? Is this normal? Also, my brakes just went out. I can push my brake pedal halfway to the floor before my brakes will engage, and the pdeal is making that gay wooshing sound. Any ideas on that also? Thanks guys, you all have been a tremendous help.
