car shudders backfires then wont start

I have a 90 GTA 5.7 all stock execpt for slp exhaust there is 125,000 miles on it

I was driving at about 74mph It started to shudder a little like i was running out of gas and started to lose power so i accelrate and it begins to backfire So i stop on road sat for a minute or so then try to go again. Got back up to about 65mph starts to do it all over agian. so I stop again look at the enging exhaust. it all looks fine so i try to go again. Now it will only star at about 1,400 rpm or it with backfire and choke out. went like that trying to make it home for about 4 miles then the engine whent from about 1,000 rpm to 0 and it hasnt started since. It turnsover and acts like it wants to start but it just wont. At first I thought maybe my cats were cloged from what ive read on the forum but i removed them and it still does the same thing. Dont know what to check now or do. When i turn it over I can smell gas. SO i dont think its the fuel pump, but im not an expert so any suggestions or ideas would be greatly apprieciated

check spark.

but to tell you the truth it sound slike when i broke the iming set on my last chevy. Driving down the road all the sudden big pops and crackles, and the next thing i know she died and didn't start for a couple weeks after i figured it out.

I hope thats not whats wrong.

1. Check fuel pump, leave the car in the off position for atleast 5 minutes, turn it to the on but do not start, and listen, you should heard the pump prime, if not, electrical, or dead fuel pump. Was your gas low?

2. check spark, backfires could mean way out sparking curve or loosing spark all together.

3. check for odd sounds while turning over, use a stethescope to listen even further. A long hard peice of wood works as well. Just apply it to your ear with pressure and stick it to solid areas on the engine while cranking, hear any odds sounds, report them to us, and might help describing your problem.

Good luck

checked some stuff today on the car. I did hear the fuel pump kick in. When turning over the engine it seems to turn over really fast. My friend thinks that something is wrong with the timing because it turns so fast. Also it dosnt seem to be under any stress turning over. I'm not for sure what to do i guess i take it to the shop sometime. Is there any estimates you guys could give me if it is somthing to do with the timeing? Or any other ideas that it may be?

Check your timing. IF the timing set broke, or the chain slipped, it will be off.

Pull the cap, and see if the distributor even turns when cranking.....
