Elusive power loss... One day runs like New, next day runs like a Geo

Hey everybody,

I am having this very annoying problem. My car is an 86 TA 305TPI/700R4. One day it will run perfect, idles smooth, no vibration, no hesitation when I step on the gas and great pickup. Then the next day I warm the car up (do absolutely nothing else to it) and the car starts having this annoying vibration, a pretty rough and surging idle, hesitation off idle, and a huge loss in power.

Tell me what could cause this unstable condition. IAC, TPS what? Bad injectors possibly. I am this close to taking it to a dealer (when I swore I never would) to fix the problem for me. Please for the love of G0d tell me whats the problem here. Any ideas, suggestions, whatever...

ihad a problem similar to that once, it turned out to be the flywheel. after a while of that kind of crap, the thing just broke, guy at the shop thought i was an idiot =) but he knew my dad so he only charged me the flywheel =) now i dont let other people do that shxt for me =) pop it up and look at the wheel, maybe its crap.
or maybe this is totally unrelated.

Ok thanks for the help,

Now can somebody explain something to me. Is the flywheel teh same thing as the flexplate or is located on the front end of the crank. Still even if its bent the condition should be constant and should not go away and come back. Any other ideas???

Loose or bad plug wire. Did it run badly when it was humid/rainy out?

I had the fuel pump on my 89 Formula give me the same sort of problems. It was completely sporadic, until I finally gave up and took it to the dealer. They tested the fuel pressure, and after replacing the pump it was fine.

another thing you may want to try is the connections that goes directly from the negative battery terminal to the body.... check it by taking a jumper cable or other wire from the nagative terminal to somewhere on the actualt body of the car, and see if it still does it.... when my car started doing what your s is, but mine was backfiring, i found out it was that stupid little wire.... i hooked up 2 now, just to make sure their is always a connection.

Ok thanks for the help, I will check all of these out as soon as the damn rain stops. I would prolly put my money on bad spark plug wires since I didn't get around to changing them fixing all the **** thats been wrong but now its about time.

Anybody have any different suggestions, just give me something to check, the more the better my chance of finding out wahts wrong with my car.

BTW I have a fuel pressure gauge hooked up at the fuel rails, whats supposed to be the normal fuel pressure?
