able to reuse rusty block?

well my search for a 400 is finally over.ithink, its rusty, the guy showed me another block where the cylinders were rusted even worse and he did .030 over and it looked fine, am i able to clean up the rest of the block myself or do i have to get it hottanked orwhatever it takes. the pistons have mold growing on the top of them! this is through a reputable machine shop so im not too worried about getting ripped off, but is there anything else that i should really look out for??

the other things is that one of the rods is disconected because it had a spun bearing. im just going to buy everything new so im not 2 worried about it but just for my future knowledge, is the bearing possible to replace?

If it's light surface rust, it could be cleaned up by honing. If it's worse than that, then boring might take care of it. If it's exceptionally scabby and pitted (like someone used it as a boat anchor in salt water) or it's already been bored out to .030 or more, then it might not be salvageable.

I would have them hot tank it and magna flux it regardless. My machine shop hot tanked, mangafluxed it and put new freeze plugs in and new cam bearings in for $130.

If your machine shop is worth his salt, I"m sure he'll hone the bores and mic them out to see if you need a bore.

All that for $130? Christ, where's your machine shop?? Most around here want $80-$100 JUST to install cam bearings on a bare block.

But like everyone else said, have it checked out, but it's *probably* good unless it's been worked over before.

Oh and by the way....my buddy had a motor with surface rust from sitting. It was already .040 over, and he had bought new rings and whatnot already. Well he didn't wanna go any further over, so he had it honed, and just used his .040 pistons and rings because he was broke. Yes it had blowby because of this, but it still ran like a raped ape, runs awesome still.

I"m in Massachusetts.

Here's a list of what he did and what it cost me....

Hot tank, magna flux and new brass freeze plugs....$100...
New cam bearings and installed...$30
Polish crank....$30
Bore block.... 20 a bore times 8 bores....$160
.030 pistons(hypereutectic speed pro with rings $15 each for pistons and I think $30 for the rings......$150
recondition old connecting rods, flip pistons and new roda bearings with arp bolts....$175
double roller timing set $20
new main bearings and 4 bolt main arp bolt main bolt set plus assembly......$200

and that's my short block. it was 8oo and change total, I tossed him 900 and he had it done in less than 3 weeks.

he used to be open full time but now he has a different job and he's only open at night and will only do select jobs.
