I believe it is either fuel knock or ..I don't what else which is why I need you guys help. If my car is lower than a quart of oil I hear a gurgling sound. If my oil level is where it should be I hear the same gurling sound if I use Regular gas. It is not as obvious if I use 89 octane and almost disappears completely if I use premieum(I live in the highest gas market in the USA) which is $2.10 per gallon. This sound can only be heard on hard acceleration usually around 30 or 55 m.p.h. and never when ideling which makes me think it is not rods or lifters but I really don't know being more of a driver than mechanic. HELP! I like a quite car and this is making me nervous. BTW 5.0 LG4 with Quad jet 4 bbl carb and no loss of power. Runs fine but did not pass emminsions. also has all emmisions stuff still on car.

Could be knock, try checking the timing to see if it is retarded, if it is set to stock try advancing it.

Hope that sheds some light.

Yeah, I know that when my car knocks, it sounds like a gurgling. "Pinging" is sort of a misnomer. Unless, maybe you had some sort of itty-bitty 1.6L H@nda with watch batteries for pistons.
Maybe it is detonation.

do what the opposite of drakar said. retard your timing by 2 degrees at a time until it goes away. its spark knock.

 

may not be your timing, but it'll help.

when i stayed in AZ, i was using 76 plus and got a very slight knocking noise (almost gurgling sound during accel). i switched to SHELL premium or even plus (dont use regular, just me), and have never heard that noise again.

i'd say try a different brand gas and higher octane. i live in CA now too, and it sucks.
