stock carb'd electric fuel pump

I was surfing Hotrod's site (surprizingly big) and came accross the My Generation Camaro buildup. I started reading and on part 2 they state:

This ’87 was the last year for carburetors on third-generation Camaros. It employs a small electric in-tank pump that pushes fuel up to an engine-driven mechanical pump. Even this combination of electro-mechanical pumping action is insufficient, so that’s where we went next. We bolted on a stronger Holley mechanical pump to ensure the feedback Q-jet carb had plenty of fuel.
Is this true? For Firebirds as well? 82 Firebirds? Because I have a lot of shop manuals and illustrations and I do not remember seeing this anywhere (for carb'd cars at least) . Should/can I change this out?

In the early years the carbed cars only had the mechanical pump. I think only 1987 had both the electric pump and the mechanical pump from the factory, although an electric pump was sometimes added by the dealer as part of a kit to fix vapour lock problems.

The low pressure pusher pump in the tank on carb'ed cars was to help aleveate the hot soak/vapor lock problem that the L69 cars had. 83-early 84 with the dealer installed TSB fix and late 84-86 L69 5.0L HO and '87 LG4 5.0L will have factory installed helper pump. The '87 LG4 is basically an L69 minus the better camshaft and high flow exhaust.

...and air cleaner. And flattop pistons (slight dish in '87).

But, unless added, your '82 won't have the pusher in-tank electric pump.

I am not sure if your 82 will have one, but my 1983 G20 had one. I used the wiring to run the TPI pump in a TBI tank.
