advice on upgrades for an 86-87 monte ss

ok I know again this might not be the right place for this but a lot of you seem to be very knowledgeable on this board..

a friend of mine wants to buy an 86 or 87 monte carlo ss.. apparently they came with a 305 using a c3 carb setup which is computer controlled. they have the air pump and egr and all that crap.. the trick is he wants to either upgrade cam, heads ,intake etc, or swap the engine.. he wants to keep it 100% emission safe. anyone have any ideas or know of anyone that has done this??

thanks..

The motor is basically the same as the F car L69. It responds to all the same mods the same way. His first mod should be a good set of application-specific headers such as Edelbrock TES; then a cam, such as a Comp XE262H; then heads.

My late little brother had a 87 MC SS, his was not a roller motor. I do not know for sure if that is typical or not but I suspect that it is.

Here's the kind of results he might get... in this case, this motor went from 190 HP to about 265 HP, with similar mods, retaining compliance with California emissions.

RB is on the money...

Exhaust (Headers/CatBack) will wake that thing up!

Don't go crazy on the cam(too radical) and heads and it should remain emissions legal while putting out decent power.

Finally, the key is to have ittuned properly not only to put out max power, but to have optimal(low) emissions.
