quick question before i buy this IROC

someone is selling an IROC and says that it has a 5.7 that was factory, but put it in after the car had 100,000 miles. now it has 70,000 on the new engine. and its an Automatic. did a 86 IROC ever come with a factory 5.7 and Auto?

Check out the Tech section on the first page of this site. It says only fifty 5.7's were made in '86. You can also run the VIN # in the tech section.

The guys could have killed the 305 and said put a 5.7 in to replace and paid a dealer to put it in ...... 50 is all that came out in 86 and none were installed AFTER 100,000.

I am almost 99.99% sure of this .... unless someone is more sure of themselves then me .... easiest thing is the 8th digit on the vin will show an 8 for L98 5.7 if it is anything else it is a swap.

For all practical purposes, there were no 350s put in 86 F cars.

All engines were "factory" engines at one time or another (after all, they don't exactly grow on trees or anythimg). So if the motor has been swapped, the odds are at least 10,000 to 1 that the motor that went in is a "factory" motor. That choice of words is a dead giveaway for a smokescreen. Watch out.

Check the block casting number, and verify that the block is in fact a 350 block. Casting numbers don't lie, but used car sellers do. To refer to the odds again, I would bet that anybody who says it's a 350 has at least a 90% chance of lying. People post about that all the time on this BBS: "He told me it was a Vette 350..." but the casting number is for a 3.736" bore, and they find out only after buying pistons, rings, etc. that they got sodomized.

Rule #1 of buying a used car: never believe a single word out of the mouth of someone selling a used car, unless you can independently verify it yourself.

In very, very inconvenient places. Check mortec.com for the locations of casting numbers and their meanings.
