hood clerance with victor junior intake on TA
Hey guys.
I am having some issues with a 3" air cleaner clerance with a victor junior intake on my '88 Trans Am. I think its the same height as the Performer Rpm. I had the same issues when I had the RPM intake, but, I lived with it. Right now I want to add my nitrous plate, and it seems that I need to find the right drop base airfilter, or, get a top shot system or something like that. I need help selecting the best air filter assembly, so I'll tell you what I have and give me suggestions please:
'88 Trans Am, stock hood
Vic Junior intake, 750 dbl pumper holley w/manual chocke
Right now, as is, the 3" filter (drop base, unknown brand) hits the top of the hood slighly. Over time the lid and filter element get beat up, and the hood scratched. I need help. I don't want to change the hood.
I was told that milling the chocke housing makes it easier to run a different style drop base air filter, is this true, and if so what style? Will a pro-form 850 cfm main body help this?
Anyone who has had a vic junior or rpm intake on one of our cars can help. Thanks guys.

You must have one of the Vic Jr's that had a 1" taller carb pad cause a normal Vic Jr is quite a bit shorter than a Perf RPM ans will easily fit under your F-Bird hood even wth a NOS plate.
The lowest height good drop base aircleaner is the old L-72/L-88 corvette air cleaner from the late 60's/ 70's
Yes you should remove the choke horn on a holley carb for this aircleaner. And shorten the blowl vent tubes a little.
The carb linkage my need to be modified as the base snugs down lower than your aftermarket drop base does.
The back of the base will hit a HEI distributor, just carve off a bit of sheet metal fron the back of the base to clear the distributor. Smaller GM and other distributors clear easily. This base will give you about 1" more clearance than the typical aftermarket drop base air cleaner will.
You can buy this air cleaner base from Noah Performance the PN is 2193b
You could also swap your tall vic JR for the standard Vic JR intake #2975 it is 1" shorter.
You have the option of haveing your intake drilled and the NOS tubes installed directly in the top of the plenum under the carb flange.
If you have the tall Vic Jr. this special aircleaner base will not help you enough when you add a Nitrous plate.
You'll have to change the intake manifold in that case.
Here is a pic of the base
How thick is the nitrous plate you want to use?
what is the part # on your Vic JR?
For the shortest possible combined air cleaner height you could use Weiand TeamG manifold #7530 with the Nitrous plate and the above air cleaner.

I am using a Victor Junior Bowtie II, match ported to the heads, I THINK its #2972, but I could be wrong. Could be a 2996. I am not home so I can't check physically yet to be sure. I didn't think it was the taller version, but now I am not sure.
It is shorter then my Performer RPM, but not too much.
The nitrous plate is from a Eddy Performer RPM kit, I think its 1/2". The hood always closed with the RPM and a 3" standard drop base filter, but it did rub.
I am considering the spray bar, and even the top shot system. The intake is match ported, so I don't really want to change intakes at this point.
Thanks for all your info.
