non thirdgen, but still Chevy problem, please help
I have as a daily driver a little 86 Chevy Sprint. It has "semi" computer control, 5 speed, and the 1.0 liter engine. What my problem is, it will run for about 3-5 minutes then cut off (like when an ignition module dies). If I am driving the car when this happens and I leave it in gear it will restart in about 3 seconds. If I am just sitting, I can turn the key and it will restart after about three or four cranks. I don't think it is a fuel problem cause it doesn't die slowly like it is running out of gas, it just plops right on its face. Has anybody got any ideas on what to look for? I have looked at everything I can think of. I did also test the module but it was running fine when I turned it off and took the distributer apart. Thanks for your input!

Wiggy,
Does the "semi-computer" display any error codes?

does it always wait a few minutes to die? If it only does it when cold, it could be something with the computer going into closed loop mode. If not, heres my best guess. Since you said its 'semi-computer' controlled, im guessing its carbed. If the fuel pump is not working right it could possibly fill up the bowl in the carb, and then stop pumping enough to keep it full and eventually run out. This would make sense why cranking or rolling in gear would work to start it, since both of those will turn the fuel pump.

Sorry, yes it is carbed. The computer doesn't have an ALDL port. What it has is a switch to tell if something is wrong or not with one of the sensors or solenoids. It does not give codes. If, when the switch is flipped and the light flashes, it means something is wrong and it (Chiltons) tells you to start ohming switches. I ohmed everything it told me to ohm but all checks good. I have never had a fuel pump problem before, I thought it would just slowly die instead of (snap fingers) quitting just like that. It just feels like it is losing fire. Also, it doesn't have to be all of the way cold to do it.
