Harmonic Balancer
i had my car on the lift today, running, and my mechanic pointed out that the harmonic balancer was wobling back and forth and suggested I get a new one. my question is, is that what these things do before they die, and if i were to purchase a new one what size, is it internal or external balance, will a jegs replacement be fine for 190 bucks.
the car is a basicaly stock 84 L69, no moderations that would alter the max rpm so i dont see why a new stock balancer wouldnt do fine, but i always like to put something a little better on, what do u guys recomend?

On the factory balancer, there is an inertia ring pressed between the inner hub and the outer. When this ring slips, the outer hub slides around as well. I'd say it's time for a replacement.
As far as size, factory is 6 3/4". As far as function, any over the counter works. The kind you see in Jegs and Summit, that cost $100+, they just work better. If it's a basically stock motor, a stock replacement will do just fine.
As far as balance, you need internal. Over the counter will take care of that for you as well as size. Ordering online you will need to find the correct part number.

so local parts store and tell them my make and model will be less of a hassel and will do the same job as a more expensive jegs replacement?

How much time do you spend above 6000 RPMs?
If none, a stock replacement will be fine.
I got mine off of eBay. About $50 to my door, IIRC.
