Harmonic Balancer

Hey guys, my harmonic balancer ring has slipped so I want to replace it. How hard are they to install?

Not terribly difficult. You'll need a puller and an installer to do it. The puller you can buy or rent, the installer you can buy, rent or make.

Sounds good I will probably go ahead and do it myself then. Im sure Autozone could probably rent me the tools I need. What exactly is involved in taking it out and installing one?

Take the accessory belt(s) off, take the pulley(s) off, remove the water pump, remove the balancer bolt, bolt the remover onto the balancer, turn the forcing screw until the balancer is pulled off.

Lightly lubricate the crank snout, slide the new balancer on until it stops, thread the installer fully into the crankshaft, turn the forcing nut until the balancer bottoms out on the crank, remove the installer, reinstall the balancer bolt, water pump, pulley(s) and belt(s).

I originally posted it without taking the water pump off, but then I couldn't remember if it needed to come off or not.

I feel so cheated. Usually threads go on for days, but this one was handled so quickly and efficiently. I guess I'll just have to accept it and move on.
