Engine Identification
Engine Identification
Hey, I just bought an 87 Camaro LT. However, im running into probs when i try to buy parts for the engine, nothing fits. Im thinking that the engine is not the original. Currently it has a V6 2.8 MFI. Is there any ID on the motor that will tell me what the motor was originally out of?
9502,
Tbe right front deck of the block on SBC engines has a milled pad and identification numbers stamped there. The last six digits of the VIN should conincide with the numbers on the block. I'm not sure if the location is the same on the 173 V-6, but it is likely close. There should also be a casting number at the left rear ledge of the block with a date code. If the date is reasonable given teh build date of the car, it might be an original.
I have an '86 TA with the original 305 TPI, and I've had problems getting even some simple parts, like the correct distributor cap, from places like AutoZone. They must not have their database quite right.
