Big Problem...Whats Wrong

Hey guys. Look in my sig. for info.

My car, when driven on the highway, and especially in the summer, drops oil pressure to 30, sometimes below. It idles around 30 too, but lower after it has already ran for a while. It fluxuates a little, depending on your RPM. In park, if you rev to about 4500 RPM, it almost hits 60. What could be the problem?

Nothing is wrong, as a rule of thumb every 1000rpm divide by 100. Your pressure will drop after it warms up because the oil thins out.

Oh man, you've got big problems. It seems that your crankshaft is spinning out of control, causing your camshaft, distributor, and oil pump to speed up. If this continues, your engine may only last a few hundred thousand miles. If you want to get rid of this fluxuating oil pressure problem, you could try draining your oil and filling your crankcase with roofing tar. That should keep the problem at bay.

Those oil pressure numbers don't sound bad at all to me, especially not if you're stuck with a 2.73 gear to where your RPM is like 1500 on the highway.

The rule of thumb racers use for minimum acceptable OP is 10 psi per 1000 RPM. So really, if it's 30 psi at 3000 RPM, you're OK. In fact, older small blocks mostly had a pump with a 35 psi regulator spring in it.

If the motor isn't in any kind of low OP distress (clattering lifters, rapidly & severely blackened & burned oil, oil on the dipstick smoking hot, etc.) then you have enough. I think your numbers are adequate.
