Quick A.I.R. Removal Question
Quick A.I.R. Removal Question
89 Rs.I'm taking the smog pump off. I bought the belt reccommended in the tech article (967K6.. couldn't find a 968K6.. no big deal though). Anyway, my pump is located at the very bottom left if looking at the engine from the front. Did i get the right size belt? Also, it appears that the pump itself is like one piece with everything. Which bolts do I remove to get the thing off. Thanks guys

The belt ought to work, it's only .1" shorter than the recommended one. As for removing the smog pump, it's easy. There's 3 bolts in the front of the pulley. Loosen these with the belt on, it's easier that way. Then take off the belt and the pulley. Then there's a bolt on the back of the air pump that connects the air line to the pump. Take that off too. Next there are two (I think) bolts that hold the pump to the accessory bracket. Take out the bottom one, and then the top one. The top one is really long and threads into the cylinder head. After you take out the pump you ought to put the long bolt back in. This is if I can remember correctly. It's been a while.

Okay.... the bolts on the front of the damn pully refuse to budge. I got one to come off though. When i try and turn them with the belt on, he motor starts to turn too. Then when i hold the crankshaft and try to loosen the bolts, the pully just slips on the belt. I've soaked these things good with liquid wrench and PB Blaster but still nothing. Any way to keep that pump from turning while i loosen the bolt? Of course this cant go easily, right? lol. Thanks again

Sounds like those suckers are in there pretty dam tight. What'd somebody do, JB weld them in there?
Anyway, you can hold the pulley in place by putting a wrench on one of the three bolts and holding it tight while you loosen two of the others. First you ought to investigate to see if the pulley really needs to come off. You may be able to get to the two bolts holding the air pump to the bracket with the pulley still on.

Yea it seems that I do have to get the pully off. I guess I will try holding of the other three bolts. Any other suggestions as to how to keep the pully from turning? Thanks again.
