Oil Filter Burst Rating

I heard a story form a freind that it's possible for a oil filter to burst. He said his grandma started her LTD one moring and the filter exploded. I didn't beleive him. He said something in the filter caused this, thats way the oil pump relief didn't spring. I still don't believe him.

Saw a similar thing happen to a guy's Ford Truck.Started it up one day and the filter exploded. What a mess! Went to the auto parts store for a new one and filled it back up with oil.Started it again, and the second one blew up!
Turns out the pressure relief spring in the oil pump broke, so pump was putting out way too much pressure.Lucky it was a truck, since he was able to drop the pan & replace the pump (in the work parking lot).
Grandma's Ford is probably the same problem.

When I was in highschool, a friend that had a 57 chevy (not new mind u), was putting a 350 in it. He asked me about a high pressure pump and I said all you need to do is shim the relief spring with a couple of washers.

The guy had no washers and just decided that stretching it a little was just as good as shimming. Well, this guy was one of the incredable hulk types and just stretched it a little tooooo much.. he ended up digging three filters out of the yard after it blew them and went down a few inches. I guess he figured it out after number 3.

So, yes, you can boof it up. Pure 1 filters are supposed to be good for 100+ psi I think.

I think you can blow them if you reuse (who does that **** anymore), but I use K&N gold this is from there website:

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">The K&N Performance Gold® Oil Filter has been constructed from the ground up to satisfy the high performance needs of race car owners and drivers, as well as the average vehicle owner who wants the very best oil filter available. Our oil filter's efficiency rating meets or exceeds the requirements of high performance automotive engine builders. The heavy duty construction provides over 550 PSI hydrostatic burst*, and helps reduce the risk of rock and stone damage.

The real quality isn't just on the outside... the inner filter element traps contaminant as small as 10 to 20 microns in size. We use metal top end caps instead of paper to ensure that no unfiltered oil can get back into the system. The solid construction allows for oil flow rates between 12-16 gpm (depending on filter size), and is unaffected by racing fuels. All K&N Performance Gold® Oil Filters are manufactured to exacting engineering standards. They are covered by a limited warranty to be free from defects in materials and workmanship when installed and replaced using engine and equipment manufacturers recommended service interval.

Anyways, I like it alittle more but so is synthetic oil but we pay for better anyways.

I recently interviewed at FRAM in perrysburg, OH. That is the filter division. They told me that one of their warranty claims deals with the fact that the oil filters they produce have different burst pressures. If you ever look at an oil filter, and it has a crown on it, like little dimples around the circumference, those little dimples act as stress risers. Oil filters are the weakest along these lines. (When metal bends, it gets weak). You may notice that their 'racing' filter eliminates this crown for just that reason. Another significant warranty claim is the lack of filter media in the filter, but you gotta love the sure-grip.

Allied Signal? You too can produce "OEM quality" replacement filters with paper drainback valves and half the required filter paper of the lowest quality units. Any idea why even Chrysler droppeed Fram as an OEM supplier?

Let's not even get into PCVs and fuel filters....
