Cooling System Performance Upgrade

I recent did some fairly serious modifications to my L69. Comp cams XE262-H, weiand stealth intake, edelbrock carb, roller tip rockers and so on...

Before I did the swap, keeping the temp down was no problem, not even in heavy traffic on a 110* day.

Now it's in the high 80's low 90's....the other day in the low 100's. The car gets up to 220, and if I have to sit at a couple of lights in a row for a while, it reaches 230!!! OUCH! I haven't even put the AC back on yet. When it gets warm like that, it seems to effect my idle and low end throttle response (perhaps because of the air being less dense due to the heat).

The single cooling fan works well, and the thermostat opens at 160*.

Would an aftermarket water pump and maybe a dual fan setup help my situation?

If so, what brand of each should I look into?

First off did you go with a NON-CC distributor with that carburetor. If not then right there you will have problems not sure if it would cause overheating though. When you changed the cam, hopefully you changed your timing chain, but did you reset the timing correctly, that could cause overheating. Also check to make sure there are no air bubbles in your radiator or that your stat isn't leaking. Other things to check would be radiator cap(cheap).

Mark,

Thanks for the pointers. Yes, I have an old vac advance HEI, accel coil and module. No air pockets in the cooling system, and I did change the timing chain and gears. And the air dam is still there and in tact.

The timing is correct. Everything is running smooth and producing more power than I expected now that it is tuned properly.

I know that heat is a bi-product of more ponies, and I need to improve my current system of removing the heat quickly and safely.

Will an aftermarket water pump work, which one?

I'm running Mobile 1 now, so I'm not too worried about the oil breakdown anymore, but am still concerned with the engine temps.

I like my Stewart High Volume pump. I got a Griffen radiator too which helps a lot. Make sure your antifreeze:water ratio is not off... too my antifreeze is bad and will lead to overheating. Don't make the same mistake I did and get a March underdrive crank pulley, your water pump will not spin fast enough. It sounds like you don't have enough radiator...

Biochem,

You're probably right about the radiator. How much did yours cost?

I'll try the pump first and see what happens.
