new to me 350 questions

Okay, I have a couple of questions, should be fairly simple. First of all, what can i find about my newly aquired engine (GM Goodwrench 350) and how? Theres numbers all over it, can you guys tell me somethin about my engine if I give you some of those numbers? Now on to my second question, this ones nice and specfic. I am going to be using the stock heads until later when I will purchase Vortec heads, id like a cam i can use with the stock heads, that will have enough grunt for the vortec. The Comp XE262 is highest on my list, how will that be with the stock heads? I'll be using some sort of intake that will be replaced by a GMPP vortec one later, Ill probably use a dualplane edelebrock performer for now with a Qjet on top of it. So, how will this cam do with this combo, mostly I want to know if it will be driveable. Thanks.

Just out of curiosity, because I'd like to buy a 350 TPI, what kind of gas mileage are you looking at with just the unmodified engine?

Sorry, don't even have it in yet, that's why I'm looking for cam recomendations now. I'm hoping for at least 15 though, we'll see.

Around 30mpg isn't THAT hard to get with 305's or 350's, regardless of fuel delivery system. But that is modified. My unmodified 305 TBI gets about 22mpg on average, which is decent, but certainly not unheard of.

Check out mortec.com for information about the numbers all over the engine.

I have the same exact motor, see sig. I get around 18 mpg. The only info. I can give you about the motor is redline is 5200 rpm. The HP max is 249 w/open headers, HEI,cast iron intake, and q-jet. TQ I believe is 304ftlbs. at 3200 rpm. I'm not sure but this site might give you more info., but I'm not sure if it is the right site or not. www.greenwoodcheverolet.com.
