Is my rear end crapping out on me?
Is my rear end crapping out on me?
Well, i was quickly murging into traffic yesterday, and i spun the tires briefly to make it in before the eighteen wheeler i cut off made me into his new hood ornament. After that, every time i go over forty, a growling humming noise comes from the rear. I inspected the tires, they look OK. So im wondering if my 9-bolt is cashing in its chips. Today some Mustang tried to run with my 400hp Formula, so i had to show him who was boss, and i did, no problem, but it required some swift gear changing and some tire burning. Well, now somewhere in my rear end is making MORE noise and every time i go over 60mph, it gets pretty loud and there is even a vibration at that speed. Whataya think? Driveshaft? Yoke? Ring and Pinion? Tires? Axles? And ig it is my rear, is there a way i can check if its out the door by not taking the cover off? Thanks guys, you rule.

You can check your u-joints easy enough by trying to turn the drive shaft and keeping the pinion yolk still. Take a look and see how the fluid level looks (there is a plastic fill-plug in the cover of the 9-bolt) and take a deep whiff... it should smell nice and sweet like freash flowers! Seriously, take a look around the pinion and see if it is throwing fluid. Check around the brakes to see if the axle bearings are shot and leaking fluid too. It could be time for a re-build...
