180 Thermostat Running Hot

Hi have a 92 Camaro RS 305 and I'm having problems with the thing running hot all the time. I replaced the Thermostat with a 180 Degree but still get up in the 220 range in traffic. Fan kicks on just fine.

That is pretty normal for a stock 3rd gen, if you don't like it you can wire your own fan switch, get a lower temp fan switch to place in your passenger side head, or run a higher concentration of water in your system.

Try dropping in some Redline Water Wetter. I don't know what others experiences are but I think it really works good. It keeps my temp down by at least 10degrees. Just make sure you don't put too much coolant in. I use a bottle of Redline, about 30% coolant, and the rest water.

I believe 220 is the temp they designed it to run at idle in stop in go, if not 230.
It's all about emissions.
[rezinn] has your solution, but I bet you can get an after market kit, that comes with a 160 thermo, and a coolant sender/switch that comes on sooner, and the Redline stuff if you believe your system has maxed out it's thermo efficiency for where you live (ie desert, or your radiator is showing it's age).

Outside of that, you'll need to flush your system really good, and clean any debris in front of your radiator, or any debris between the condenser, and radiator.

I live in Florida and it's not as hot as before. I'm wondering if it's not the fan kicking on at the right times. Someone told me that lowering the thermo temp will throw the Computer out of sync and it will stay in an open loop thinking it's warming up. Personally I just took my thermo's out before in my older Impala 1970 350 and it ran fine. But then again it doesn't have all this computer stuff that a 92 has in it. I'm just wondering what else to look at next that could cause it to get real hot 240-250 while in Traffic.

your fan kicks in at 225, and should lower the temps immediatly. you may want to get a new fan motor, this may be why the temps are getting that high. also, you may have a bad water pump.

I thought the system has two coolant senders, one for the computer, and one for the fan. So as far as I know the computer doesn't know when the fan kicks on? If you set it around 190 (forgive me, I didn't mean to insist on 160) it shouldn't interfer with the computer.

Switch to full synthetic engine oil. The benefits are worth the cost. At least try it on your next oil change, see if it makes a difference.
Again flush & clean that system. I personally had a bunch of road hair crap, which caused mine to go up 20 degrees. It was between the condenser, and radiator.
