1985 mpfi stalling also has strong odor cat????

My wife's 1985 v6 mpfi camaro which she's had since new has had a really strong exhaust odor for about two years now. The mechanic keeps saying that they all smell that way. (yeah right)

Now it's stalling when idling quite often. Brought it in and he said that there was nothing they could find. Brought it home 3 blocks and couldn't make it because it stalled out.

Two years ago the MAF was changed for a similiar problem and it solved it, I doubt that it would go bad this soon though.

I suspect the fuel filter or the cat. Tried to release the pressure of the fuel system by unplugging the fuse, but the car wouldn't quit.

I wanted to change the filter to see if that would fix it, how long should it run before the pressure is released I ran it for at least ten minutes. Also do you think I'm on the right track?

Welcome aboard.

I've heard of new MAFs failing faster than that.

But, I'd suspect O2 sensor first. It can be bad without setting an error code.

Oh, you didn't mention whether or not the SES light is coming on.
