Disable Steering Wheel Lock?
Disable Steering Wheel Lock?
Can anyone tell me the best way to disable the steering wheel lock? Yesterday, my son was driving his 91 RS V6 and he says he wheel locked while he was driving! Fortunately, he was going slow while turning into a parking lot, but it could have been disasterous at speed.
After it locked, he was able to shut it off, but then couldn't get the key to turn back on.
I went there and was able to get the ignitioin to finally turn after playing around with the wheel a bit to free it up.
I don't want to take any chance of this happening again, so I'd like to completely disable this feature.
I know that there's a lock ring inside with "teeth" that engage to a pin. What's the best/simplest way to disable this?
(searched thru the archives, but was unable to find a hit on this topic that actually included instructions...)
Thanks for anyhelp!

id recommend rebuilding or replacing the column... but if you really want to do that, its not too hard..
you'll need a steering wheel puller and a lock plate removal tool. both can be rented from autozone for free.
remove the wheel with the puller... not too hard. if you have a airbag wheel, pull the fuse and disconnect the battery.
put the lock plate remover tool on, tighten it down, remove the clip and the plate popps off.
now take a pic.. or at least look at everything.. when you see how its together, take it off, and pull the locking plate pin. and spring.
now put it back together... opposite of how it came apart... not too hard.
this does NOT solve your real problem... somehow he turned the ignition off, and the key got stuck.. really you're better off figuring out why the key doesnt always turn and how it got turned back in the first place.
