How can I improve an old '85 IROC?

Hmm. I'm reworking the exhaust a bit (had to hacksaw off the old one wsince it was badly damaged while replacing the fuel pump). Since I am near broke I am looking at replacing my muffler (with it's now gaping hole) with a cherry bomb. Hey, it's cheap. How can I quiet the cherry bomb, and reduce it's overall noise level? I have to replace everything between the cat converter to the old muffler and have a budget of $50 and has to be done tommorow at the latest.
ALSO...
Is the catalytic convert needed? I don't see why, and it'd seem to me like it would be better with a more open flow anyway. As it is, the thing rattles like a soda car with the tab broken off in it.

Since I am doing a bit of an overhaul any good ideas for quick, cheap, and dirty performance add ons or tweaks?

I use the Vortech Cherrybomb with a resonator where the cat normally is (no emissions). Quite a pleasing sound and really not much louder than stock.

If you need to get your car smog tested, the cat is needed. You also may have some backfiring issues if you run without one. And I don't think you'll be able to do all this for 50 dollars, unless you get lucky at a junkyard.
