Ack Need advice for gas tank removal!

I am still working on changing out the fuel pump and I am stuck at trying to remove tha gas tank on my '85 IROC. I saw a few posts where they said just to be careful not to bend the filler line too much. My question is: Does anyone have a clue how to actually remove it? I've wiggled it, squirmed it, shaken it, and still can't get the thing to come down after 2 hours. Before I take the last step and try forcing it down, I was wondering if anyone here has had this problem and what the trick is to it. Btw, I am stuck using jack stands, no lift.

You have to twist the tank, it will not come straight down.

Hmm. I have tried twisting it clockwise, couter-clockwise, moving it up, down, to the left and right, and the closest I can come is to 1/2 inch or so or the filler spout still in the compartment. I'm afraid if I force it it will break the weld. I looked extensivly online and found a copy of Haynes (yuck) that said to rotate the front end down and pull to the right. Sounds all fine and dandy, but the front end of the gas tank will not pass the rear-end. If anyone can please help me with an idea of how it must be turned I would be most appreciative.

You did drop the rearend down right? Remove the lower shock bolts this should give you the clearance you need. I had to bend the filler neck to get mine out. I just pulled down on the tank to bend it. Just be careful not to bend it to much. You can put a bar in the filler spout to bend it back in place after you install it. You can also take a pair of channel locks and open the body work a little under the car where the filler neck goes thru. This will make the next pump easyer to install.

It took me less than 7 hrs to do mine really wasnt as bad as I had read.
