I finally started my motor for the first time yesterday!!! I ran it for like a minute and the header paint began to bubble right up and smoke like crazy. I've read that it can be due to a lean mixture and timing issues. I shouldn't be lean because I'm running 24#injectors at 48psi. Now as far as timing goes it would be highly retarded to cause this condition right? I was going to mess around with it last night so I could break it in, but I didn't have access to an inductive timing light and it was getting dark. Also, which direction does the distributor have to be turned to advance the timing...I would think counter clockwise??

Paul,
I'm pretty sure counter-clockwise to advance. I've found with computer controlled cars you really can't "listen" and set the timing like the older point/condensor carb cars. I've thought I've been close on my TPI cars and found myself like 6 to 10 deg off.
p.s. I really enjoy your posts. I bought used SLP headers from you so I feel some of my money is in your motor
plus I remember your problems with getting the rotating mass to spin, then something about breaking something off the block. Good to see you got it up and running, if not well at least.
