lifters

mechanic has told me that if I have noisy lifters there re 3 way to deal with it:

1. before changing the oil add 1-2 liters of dexronm and run the motor for 1/2 hour, if no succes proceed to 2
2. take them out and manually try to clean , "move" them
3. change them for new ones

anyone had tryied the 1 step?

??

any comments?

Step 1 is a popular way of trying to deal with the problem which supposedly plagues the early Acura Legend 2.5L and 2.7L V6's. I say "supposedly" because I have yet to experience this problem even after 303K miles. Anyway, instead of using Dexron, they use Ford Type F as it is supposed to be more "detergent" than Dexron. Some owners use Restore, but this too isn't a permanent fix. The noise always returns.

Your mechanic didn't mention what I would consider Step 1; valve adjustment.

Running a quart of ATF in the engine oil will definitely help lifters. However, it's relatively rare that valve train noise actually originates from the lifters themselves; more often it's a result of loose rockers, bent pushrods, worn rocker tips where they contact the valve stem tip, damaged rocker ball and/or seat, or any of a long list of other causes.

I'd recommend using a quart of ATF in your oil, even permanently. I've run many motors for hundreds of thousands of miles that way. ½ hour won't do much good. Type F is not more detergent than Dexron, it merely has nore additive to make clutches hook up. I use Dexron for the motor cleanup thing. I seriously doubt it will cure your noise. Try adjusting the rockers first. If it still makes the noise, stick a piece of heater hose in your ear and listen to every part carefully and see if you can locate the exact source of the noise. Bent push rods are usually easy to spot: they won't be spinning, and they'll have lots of wear on one side where they pass through the head and none on the other side.
