also, when car starts up oil pressure is high at 60, then drops to normal range when i start to drive. perhaps gauge is not right, i dont know, thought this might help

OK, first and easiest, my pressure guage goes past 60 when i start it up for a few minutes. realy nothng wrong with that, as logn as it drops some.

but as far as ur cold start, could be a number of things. u might wanna replace your coolent temp sensor. and u need to test ur cold start valve, but do u have a fuel pressure guage?

i had the same problem, replacing my coolant temperature sensor, and my idle air control fixed it...

ah i just reread ur thing, u do have a fuel pressure guage...

heres how to test the cold start valve.
make sure the engine is cold
disconnect either the 4-way distributor connector, or both of the fuel inj. fuses in the fuse panel. hook up the fuel guage. turn the key ON, note the fuel pressure, and try and start it, the pressure should drop about 3 psi,

im pretty sure thats how it goes. if not then someone else will know, and im sure Vader will be here soon!!

Reagan,

Define "cold", please. What are the air and coolant temperatures?

The cold start valve (or programming on '89 and up TPIs) is not in effect unless the coolant is below 105°F and the CTS and IAT are within 20° of each other. The cold start control should permit a timed pulse of the CSV during engine cranking for up to eight seconds for cold starting. This cycle will not repeat unless the ignition has been off for at least twenty seconds.

Breathment has the right idea. Prime the fuel rails, then disable the fuel pump, ignition, and service injectors. Monitor fuel pressure while cold cranking (below 105°F CTS). The pressure should drop when the CSV operates.

when i say cold, i dont mean climate, i live in florida, i was just saying it happens when the car sits for a while. such as in the morning, after work, etc. if i run the car, run in to a store for say 5 minutes, the car will crank right up. but after it sits for a couple of hours it has the problem. it will turn over for a while, start, and then usually die. then on the second try it will start right up. so i should disable fuel pump and injectors, start car, and check pressure? what should i look for on the gauge? if it drops 3 pounds is that normal? and if it doesnt? thanks for your help
