Question on gear ratios.....

Ok, I was reading some other topic and I read if you have a five speed and you take the car up to 70 in fourth gear, then it should read at about 3400 rpms.(If you have 3.42 gears) So the 3.42 gear ratio came stock with my car and I wanted to test this out. But when I got to 70, it was reading like 3200 rpms. Does this mean I have like 3.23 gears? Because the last owner of my car broke the axle and replaced it before he sold it to me. Could he have replaced it with an axle with those gears? And if they are 3.23 gears, does that hurt performance any? Just thought I would ask, thanks a lot!

It's possible that maybe he got different gears as well, but do you have stock tire heights, this will alter the reading. There is a more accurate way of telling, it has something to do with rotating the tires in the air and how many times they turn, or something like that I'm sure someone else can elaborate.
