fuel pump

I have a85 z28 and have had a problem with the fuel pump shutting off on me while on the road or just starting up, when i go underneath the car and wiggle the wires then i can get the fuel pump to start. i am thinking that the harness from the tank to the frame of the car is bad, i have already changed the pump and filter, and when it doesnt run i can put the car in acc. and wiggle the wires then hear it kick in. Where can i get a harness
thanks
john

Fuel Harness..

John,

My son and I have an '82. On the '82 the wires for the pump enter the car at the driver's rear tail lamp/storage box. Somewhere along the line Chevy changed the set-up and it goes over the rear axle and enters the car behind the rear seat back. In either case the wires head for the driver's side door sill area, travel along the side and up in behind the fuse panel.

I think you need to find where the short is and just repair it. You said you replaced the pump.... I assume you pulled the tank? You probably just pinched the wires as they come down the side of the tank. There are some sharp edges and several places you could pinch the wires. Unfortunately, it seems like your going to be pulling that tank again...

Sooner or later that shorted wire will cut all the way through and your wiggle deal isn't gonna work anymore!

If your wires are really chewed up badly a Pull-A-Part J.Yard is probably the cheapest and fastest place to get the replacement.

Sincerely,
Kurt
