Heater/Vent fan relay(s)

I have two different repair manuals for my '89 TA and neither mention where the relay is for the interior vent/heater fan. I'm guessing it is (or they are) sitting on the passenger fender either behind the headlight or in front of the coolant reservoir (there are 3 identical relays in that area). Is this right?

The reason I want to change it out is because the max fan setting doesnt work (the fourth click on the ****). 1-3 work. Anyone else had this problem and have a suggestion? Someone mentioned the relay.

While you're checking things, look in Vader's excellent pic, right above the "A" in the word "Accumulator". It's a connector of extremely stupid design that feeds battery (big red wire) to the high speed relay. I'd guess that the odds are about 80% that your problem is that yours is burnt to a pile of ash; about 18% that it's the relay; and about 2% all other possibilities.

RB,

Roger that. After all the excellent design WeatherPack connectors used throughout the balance of the electrical system, they had to "Ford" the wiring up with a piece like that. It's a good thing it isn't a critical connection for vehicle operation...

yes, in swapping my engine a few months ago i noticed that connector is TOAST! good call. however, the fan still works, just not on the highest setting. i'll swap out the relay.

thanks for the excellent pic, Vader. once again, you're invaluable.

The way that system works, is that the relay is de-energized normally, and the power for the motor comes directly through the dash swich and the resistors. In high speed, however, the relay gets 12V from the dash switch, and operates; it disconnects the resistors, and hooks the motor straight up to the battery via that feed. So, if that connector goes bad, the lower 3 speeds will work, but the high speed won't.

If your connector is known to be toast, try replacing it with the big kind of an insulated yellow slide terminal.
