MANUAL FLYWHEEL FOR FIREBIRD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does anyone know where the HECK to get a manual flywheel for a 2.8 liter pontiac? I've called everywhere. And if autozone can't get it for me, I don't know who can. Junk yard? Thanks, also how hard would it be to install?

Yup, that would be a boneyard item... visit your local buzzard.

I don't find them particularly hard to install, but then, brain surgery isn't hard for brain surgeons either. It's a fairly routine auto maintenance kind of thing, usually done as part of a clutch job.

If you get a used one, make sure you get it resurfaced before you install it. It would be a good time to put in a new clutch too, which I suppose you might already be doing.

What happens if my clutch is fine? Well, it does need a new release bearing though. Do you know what I'm talking about? Also, where could I get a new clutch? and for how much? My starter works, it's just the teeth on the flywheel are all messed up. But my clutch is fine. Thanks.

Youre replacing the flywheel on it because the teeth are bad? I'm pretty sure you can replace just that ring on a 2.8, I used to do it all the time where I worked on various applications. There are very few flywheels that dont have a replaceable ring gear.

manual transmissions are the only one's that use a flywheel to point this out. to find what your looking for your either going to have to get one from a dealer or boneyard. i don't believe you'll find a replacement aftermarket unit for one that old, but it is possible.

madmax is right, you should be able to replace the ring gear. It's just pressed onto the flywheel. So that's definitely an option if you can't find a junk flywheel. But as common as 2.8 motors are, there should be no problem at all finding one. In fact, the reason you can't find a new one, is probably that used ones are so plentiful: who in his right mind would pay $200 - $300 for something that they can get a perfectly good one of for a fraction of that price? Especially since it's a 2.8, so there's no kind of performance or upgrade type issues to be concerned with?

Still, you have to remove the trans; pull the bell housing; diassemble the clutch; remove the flywheel to repair or replace it; and then reverse the procedure. If you've never done it before, you'll discover that this is a whole bunch of work. Now I realize that we aren't all made out of money; but at the same time, unless your clutch is known to be brand-new, and not merely working OK at the moment, it makes good sense to postpone the next time of re-doing all of that same work all over again by renewing it completely now, while you've already got it in pieces.

My advice would be to get a used flywheel, have it turned, and do a complete clutch job including disc, clutch, pilot bearing, and release bearing; and drive it another 80,000 miles knowing you don't have to fool with the clutch again.
