Steering...

This weekend I was driving the 87 Z-28 b/c I had a hose leaking. As I was driving I noticed that the steering column would move up and down at the point where it tilts. You could move the steering wheel up and down slightly without touching the tilt release. What is loose inside there that could cause it to do this?
Also, while I was messing with the steering wheel going down the road, I dropped the passenger side front wheel off of the road and jerked back and it didn't want to come. I got back on the road and now the steering wheel is about 1/4 or 1/3 of a turn counter-clockwise when the car is driving straight. I doesn't really pull but the steering wheel is no longer lined up. I pulled the horn cover off of the wheel and checked the shaft that the wheel goes on and the mark on the shaft is lined up with the mark on the steering wheel. What did I mess up? Is somthing messed up inside the column or did I twist something inside the steering box? I have no clue where to start but I want to get it fixed b/c my dad drives the car most of the time and I did tear it up. Can you pull the steering wheen and put it back on straight although the marks will NOT be lined up? Would this be a not so smart thing to do? Thanks for any advice.

The up down slack is a somewhat common problem, not just on thirdgens. Probably just needs tighten up. The crooked steering wheel after putting it in the ditch is the alignment.

Wouldn't the alignment being off like that make it pull hard? It doesn't pull(little to none).
