lean or rich?????

how can you tell if a car is burning too rich or too lean i guess k&n has out a device to measure it but it would like to knowmif there was any way to tell without that.and what are the side effects of burning too lean and too rich.what i mean is the difference between rich and lean.

Get an air to fuel ratio gauge. That will tell you if it is running rich or lean. Running lean isn't a good thing. I would prefer to run too rich rather than too lean. A piston with a hole melted init isn't so good for performance.

Or you can use the Field Service Mode of the ECM as a general indicator of the fuel mixture. If the ECM is trying to enrich the mixture, it's running lean, and vice-versa.

Do an archive search on "Field Service Mode" and you should find detailed instructions.
