After 200 mile trip, car burned 1/2 Qt oil. Why?
After taking a trip over the weekend which was a little over 200 miles round trip, I got back home and discovered my car burned up about 1/2 quart of oil. My car is an '89 with 37,700 original miles. What would cause the engine to consume so much oil? The car runs absolutely perfect, but does shoot a little smoke out the pipes upon startup.
Thanks for any help

One simple answer to your question. Due to low mileage (I know that sounds wierd but my 86 IROC w/70k on it does the same thing) and a faulty valve seal design so many GM cars have that problem. I drove my IROC after it sat for almost two years and had the same thing happened. But after 30 days and about 1500 miles it stopped. With your car being an 89 with mileage that low it could also be that your rings aren't seated real well due to lack of running the enging. I'm willing to bet that one of these two things is the cause of the problem. It may be that it's just a little bit of both. One good thing about a small thing like that is that you know the top parts of your motor are getting ample oil.
