Vin code G vs Vin Code H

When ever I go to buy a part for my 85 305 block, it has a listing for a 4bbl 'G' and a 4bbl 'H', what is the difference? The motor came from an 85 Z28 with a 4bbl qjet 1905, how would I tell if I dont have the car or original vin?

Hmmmm.... let's search for clues....

Maybe you look at the VIN. Just a thought, FWIW.

The 8th digit of the VIN is the engine code. In that year of that kind of car, H is the low-perf LG4; G is the HO L69; and F is the TPI 305.

The G is the L69 "H.O." 305, the H is the regular old LG4. Most parts are the same between the two.

gee thanks for the help, try reading my post before bashing me. I said I dont have the original car, nor do I still have the paper I wrote the vin down on. So obviously the idea of looking on the vin number wouldnt work too well. Considering my block says LG4, I assume I have an 'H' vin.

thanks for the info FWIW.

No bashing; just a gentle jibe. Maybe I should have use some smilies or something.

If all you have is the block, then it's the same for all of those motors anyway. Pistons may be different, I know they were in early years, but then they started using flat-tops in all of them at some point. Heads are the same in all years. Cams are different.

Nearly always, you can tell them anything you want, and it makes no difference; they just have to have something, because their computer won't give them anything at all until they answer that question.
