What's this pump attached to my A/C?

I began taking apart my air conditioning system cause it like doesn't work and will be in the way of my header installation, so I was working on the pump or whatever it's called that is attached to the motor with the belt, and I found this odd looking pump of some sort attached to the compressor. The pump appears to be attached to my smog equipment which I am SERIOUSLY considering getting rid of. I have about 100 vacuum lines spread through my car, much MUCH more than I've ever seen in anyone elses car, especially on here. I was wondering what I would be hurting by getting rid of the pump? There appears to be an attachment through my brakes and through my Smog so I am VERY apprehensive on just taking it off. I was hoping that someone would be able to tell me what it is? I'll have to get some pictures of it one of these days, but until then could someone give me a clue?

Hmm I was talking in a chat room and they said possibly it might be part of the cruise control. I don't use the cruise control though so I would have no trouble taking it off... what do you think?

Cruise control is a very cool thing to use if you have police following you everywhere you go, thinking you'll be an easy ticket.

But it depends...do you think you'll ever need it?

I definately will never need it, plus it doesn't work. I'd just as soon lose the weight (all 3 pounds) that the cruise (if that's what it is) adds...I just don't want to remove it and find out later it was a vacuum pump to give extra push to the brakes or anything, but if no one else has one then I'd think it's just part of some weird aftermarket cruise control deal.

Just a guess, but it sounds like the pump you are referring to may be the smog pump. The proximity to the a/c compressor throws that idea off, but I just thought I'd throw that idea out here, maybe someone else has more info on this? If that's what it is, you shouldn't have a problem just taking it off if you don't have to worry about emmissions, and that would get rid of a bunch of vacuum lines. Don't quote me on this though, wait to see if somebody else can give you more info on this before you go taking things off.

I thought the smog pump was attached with a belt and was on the lower left (facing the car) below the alternator? What threw me was the way it's attached to the brakes. Seems like it might just be the cruise, because when I got the car checked out a few months ago the mechanic did mention something about the "crappy aftermarket cruise" I had on my car when he was checking the plug wires. I love how the car looks without the A/C hoses in the way, there's just SO much more room! I can't wait to get rid of this O2 sensor also, that hose is in the way too. I'll have to post another topic next week when I do more work on the car about what exactly to do with the silver hoses and if they affect the heater at all. None of this stuff was on my 82 SAAB, most of it is new to me, learning experience and all. You all would be suprised at how much I've learned in the last few months though, I read and learn and when I don't know I ask questions.
Anyway...
