91Z wont start, suspected fuel pump failure :(

My sisters 91 Z wont start. I am pretty sure it is the fuel pump, but I want to know if any of you guys have any ideas. The car will crank and crank, but will not start. I CANNOT hear the fuel pump energize when the key is turned to the on position. I replaced the relay, but it did not change anything. Are there any fuses that could have possibly blown? How much does a replacement fuel pump cost? Thanks guys.

if its any type of fuse, it would probably be the ecm fuse, located in the engine bay, on the passenger side, right near the coolant resevoir. a new fuel pump will cost you about 100 bucks, plus labor.

have u checked everything else? Make sure its getting ignition? might wanna either hook up a fuel pressure tester and run some other test before spending $100 on a pump and find out thats not the problem. I dont have my book in front of me right now, but tomorrow ill try to tell ya how to test it (if no one else does first). cause there is always a chance its not the pump.

Yeah, breathment is right. i had the same problem actually. The thing was, i was able to hear my pump. my problem was that the distributor went bad. It could be an ignition problem. to make sure the relay works, you should hear it click twice with a 2 to 3 second delay between clicks when you put the key in the run position. If it doesn't, then its the ecm fuse. if it does, and your POSITIVE you can't hear the pump prime, then its your pump.

Thansk for the help guys. I'll check the fuse as suggested above tomorrow. I am not sure if everything else is functioning correctly, but I am SURE that the fuel pump is not turning on. I used to be able to hear it, and not I cannot, no matter what I do.

Thanks for suggesting the fuse, it was blown, but, it stays that way When I try to put a new fuse in, it blows immediately, with nothing else on, not even the engine light. Sounds like something is shorting out the fuse, but what could it be? Any idea as to what I should look for? Thanks guys.

I'd suggest getting a DMM/DVM and look for a short to ground...yes, could be the fuelpump still, but it'd be a terrible thing to go through all the hassle of changing the intank pump, just to find out it does the same thing.

Do some searches on the TPI board and this board, I know that Vader has posted the schematic several times over the past few months.

If you can't find the scematic, I'll post the pinouts for you.

Try disconnecting the fuel pump connector behind the rear seats and replacing the blown fuse. Turn the ignition on and check the fuse again, and also test for power at the fuel pump. That will tell you if your electrical problem is the pump or not.
