Shifter Too Loose - How to fix?
Well like the topic says...
I have an 86' z28, and the tranny was replaced before I bought it, im not sure if that has anything to do with my problem or not.
My problem is that while in a gear, lets say Drive, I can freely move the shifter back and forth in drive. (like there is a feeling of at least one - 2 inches between Neutral and 2nd gear... ) Jeesh this is hard to explain. Basically I just have lag inbetween each gear on my shifter. Understand?
Now how do I fix.. Do i need to replace the cable? (maybe its streched...) Adjust something? Whuts up?

Check the bolts on the bracket holding the cable to the transmission. They sometimes loosen up and make the shifter feel very loose.

My car was doing the exact same thing whe ni bough it. turns out the cable was messed up and had a piece of a clothes hanger holding the cable to the lever on the transmission. I replaced the cable and its fine now. The previous owner of my car is freaking retarded...

Yeah, on the stock shifter, there's nothing to 'hold' the stick in gear. If you remove the cable completely from teh trans, you'll see how easily that shifter moves around! The only "lock" that stock shifter has is from going "down" a gear, say, from D to 2. But it relies on the 700r4's manual shift lever to hold itself "up".
