Fuel Gauge doesn't work 85 SC

My fuel gauge isn't working in my 85 Camaro, it is a sport coupe and has a carbed 350 and 700r4. What could cause this? I think it could be a loose ground but it might be something else. It originally had a 2.8 so it would've been fuel injected right? So it had an electric fuel pump in the tank, well now that it has the 350 it has a mechanical fuel pump. There are 2 lines coming from the tank, I assume to keep the tank pressurized? Well there is only one that is being used and it is going to the fuel pump, the other one is just hanging there unused. Could that cause the fuel gauge to not work too? Any help would be great. If it is a loose ground then where can I find it on the frame.

There is a supply and a return line on the sending unit. It shouldn't affect the operation of the fuel gage.

Sounds like you need to do a thorough electrical troubleshooting job.
